Make a New Year’s Resolution to Save on Exterior Renovations

By: Paul Caronna, General Manager of Sequoia Outdoor Supply

As we head into the New Year, we know upgrading your home and tracking your expenses are things everyone aims to keep in mind.

Home renovations, especially to the exterior, can be costly endeavors. They are also projects that will benefit you in the long run and ensure that your home and its surroundings are upgraded, resilient, reliable and exactly what you want. If you’re not careful, remodeling your backyard can get even more pricey than upgrading your entire home. Here are some helpful tips from Outdoor Living Today to help you avoid overspending on exterior renovations.

Plan your project

Prior planning prevents poor performance. This is true for just about anything in life but can raise the effectiveness and success rate of your exterior renovation project. To get a clear visual of what the finished product will be, ask yourself who, what when, where and how. Keeping mistakes to a minimal will lead to savings in the long run.

Secure multiple quotes

Depending on how much of a DIYer you are, there are some remodel projects you will be able to handle yourself. However, for others, you’ll need to lean on assistance from a professional. Do your research, secure multiple estimates and wait until you have a few prices in hand before making any hiring decisions.

Do you own demolition

We don’t recommend the DIY method for tearing down structural components of your home. While hiring a contractor to do the dirty work is ideal, smaller scale exterior demolitions can be simple. Don’t be afraid to take on deck demolition or un-assembling outer structures like gazebos and sheds.

Consider a kit

Did you know you can assemble a pavilion, pergola or gazebo on your own? Save money by using a kit, such as the ones we offer at Sequoia Outdoor Supply. Our pergola and pavilion kits come complete with everything you need to put the structure together and detailed instructions.

Spend thoughtfully

When beginning your project, spending a few extra dollars here and there can end up saving you more money in the long run. For example, consider purchasing more expensive, high-quality materials that would save you future renovation costs.

Setting a New Year’s resolution to save on exterior renovations is an attainable goal. Sequoia Outdoor Supply can help you keep and follow through with this resolution. We have the kits, supplies and knowledgeable staff to help you complete your outdoor construction project and make the experience enjoyable.

Why Adding A Pergola Can Increase Your Property Value

By: Paul Caronna, General Manager of Sequoia Outdoor Supply

A pergola can be a beautiful addition to your home as it effectively gives you more living space outdoors. Although it has great benefits for you and your family (i.e. the perfect place to catch the next Saints or LSU game), it’s important to ask what value is this adding to your home, and is it worth the investment?

Here are a few reasons why adding a pergola to your home will increase your property value:

  • Location is important. If you’re living in a warmer climate, like Louisiana, it is guaranteed that outdoor home improvements get more use. This means buyers looking for homes are willing to spend more if you already have a pergola.
  • Adding a pergola is one of the less expensive home additions. You can easily increase your property value and recoup that cost.
  • The type of pergola you choose also plays a part in increasing value. A more durable material, such as cedar, will add more value, style and class to your home and outdoor space.

If you’re looking to add more living space to your home and increase your property value, look to Sequoia Outdoor Supply for your outdoor needs. With a variety of pergola kits, you can find or customize the structure that will get you outside and increase the value of your property. Like any other major home addition, you can finance the purchase and installation costs. Call (504) 837-3300 to speak with a Sequoia associate about financing your next project.

10 Tips to Protect Your Home This Termite Season

Paul Caronna, General Manager of Sequoia Outdoor Supply

They swarm streetlights, sneak into our homes and crawl on our skin. Termites are a familiar terror to anyone living in the South, especially when the warmer weather starts to seep in. These creepy crawlies cause $5 billion worth of property damage annually, according to Pest World.

As a supplier of western red cedar, treated lumber, timbers, fencing supplies and more, we know it’s crucial for homeowners to protect their property from termites. Here are ten tips to get your started:

  1. Make time for a regular termite inspection, whether that be on a yearly or bi-yearly basis. If you suspect your home is infected, contact a professional immediately to get a second opinion.
  2. Termites need water to thrive, so get rid of any excess moisture on your property. Think about water that may be collecting on your roof or near your foundation, leaky faucets or AC units.
  3. Know the signs to look for that might mean you have a termite problem. The National Pest Management Association sites mud tubes, bubbling paint and wood that sounds hollow when knocked.
  4. If you have any exterior fixtures on your property like windows or doorframes, monitor them for any major changes.
  5. Termites feed on wood, so remove dead trees and wood from your property. If you store firewood, do so safely and away from your home.
  6. Eliminate the ways termites can access your home by sealing openings around gas and water lines.
  7. Trim your trees to make sure there are no branches or limbs touching your home.
  8. Trade your cardboard storage boxes for plastic ones. Many people don’t know that cardboard can be another enticement for termites.
  9. Mount bug screens over attic and foundation vents to physically prevent bugs from entering through these openings.
  10. If you’ve seen termites in your yard, install termite bait stations to prevent the creepy crawlies from fleeing to your home.

At Sequoia Outdoor Supply, we carry the highest quality of lumber and inspect our wood products and materials to ensure no termites affect your DIY home and garden projects. Remember all the Western Red Cedar we carry is naturally resistant to rot and insects like termites. Come by our store to pick up whatever you need for all of your outdoor construction needs!

What is Real Western Red Cedar?

Paul Caronna, General Manager of Sequoia Outdoor Supply

Did you know that Sequoia Outdoor Supply is the largest dealer of Western Red Cedar in Louisiana? We stock Western Red Cedar and highly recommend it to customers for outdoor projects. It’s a DIYer’s dream!

When deciding what wood to use for your next building project, we recommend Western Red Cedar for many reasons:

  • First off, it’s easy on the eyes. It’s a beautifully textured wood that accepts and holds a variety of bleaches and stains, which offer a quality finish and are designed to protect your investment.
  • Second, it’s durable. It’s hard to beat a wood that’s naturally resistant to decay, moisture and insects. A natural wood like Western Red Cedar tends to last longer and requires less maintenance over time.
  • Lastly, it’s environmentally friendly. Unlike other building materials like concrete and steel, Western Red Cedar is recyclable, biodegradable and requires less energy to produce.

Whether you’re a homeowner taking on your own backyard project, a designer working on a serene indoor space or a contractor working on a big job, Sequoia Outdoor Supply has all the Western Red Cedar you need to get the job done at the right price. Western Red Cedar is ideal for outdoor projects like a multi-level deck, a picture perfect pergola, outdoor furniture or kitchen, storage shed, vertical planter or even a house for your four-legged friend!

If you’re looking to give your backyard a facelift, our Western Red Cedar pavilion kits are manufactured in a variety of sizes to fit your budget. With any width and height dimension up to 16” x 16” and up to 40’ in length, we mill cedar daily to fit your need.

5 Ways to Protect Your Backyard and Outdoor Structures this Hurricane Season

Paul Caronna, General Manager of Sequoia Outdoor Supply

With Hurricane season upon us, it’s necessary to take some simple steps now to protect your backyard, landscaping and outdoor structures from damage. When a storm is threatening to impact the Gulf Coast, here are five simple ways you can prepare your outdoor area and give your family some peace of mind:

  1. Secure loose objects that can become projectiles when hurricane-force winds increase. Move lawnmowers, outdoor grills, planters, patio furniture, hanging baskets, playhouses and bicycles inside your home or garage.
  2. Tie down or anchor any immovable outdoor structures like pergolas and pavilions. For large outdoor structures that cannot be moved indoors, stack them together in the corner of your yard and tie them together.
  3. With hurricane winds measuring 74 mph or greater, trim your trees and shrubs and remove any damaged limbs on your property. Lay large potted plants down on the ground.
  4. Prepare your lawn by mowing your grass and harvesting any vegetables growing in your garden. If you evacuate for a storm, you may be out of town indefinitely. Once a storm hits, it will be easier to clean up debris if your grass is shorter. In addition, you’ll have to throw away any fruits or vegetables that have been damaged in the storm or covered by flood water.
  5. Clean out your rain gutters and make sure they are secured. Gutters can’t work to control the flow of rainwater and protect your home.

Though the threat of a potential tropical storm or hurricane can be stressful, it’s necessary to prepare in advance. As the Gulf Coast’s largest supplier of cedar products, our customers’ safety is our top priority.

At Sequoia Outdoor Supply, our garden pavilions, decks, fences and pergolas are sturdy and built to withstand heavy rains and high winds. If you have any further questions about preparing your backyard structures for hurricane season, we have a friendly, professional and knowledgeable staff available to assist you. We even have a drive-thru window to expedite your orders, and we’ll load all your materials for you, so you can get back to work quickly!
